Orlando-based startup AireHealth took the $100,000 prize at the Rise of the Rest® pitch competition and earned its place among some of the country’s most innovative companies within the Rise of the Rest Seed Fund®. The company’s portable, connected nebulizer technology that could revolutionize patient care and drug delivery drew the judges’ attention due to its potential to “… positively impact 100 million people in the US who live with respiratory illness through a more proactive approach and patient engagement.”

Orlando Biotechnology Company Lights the Way for the Next Generation of Drug Discovery

Almost everyone knows someone who knows the terror that comes with a neurodegenerative disease diagnosis like Alzheimer’s and ALS. Not only are these ailments characterized by slowly progressing neurodegeneration that leads to impairment and eventual death, but they also remain some of the most difficult diseases to treat. A persistent lack of understanding of the underlying biology of the diseases, as well as unreliable models for the development of treatments have caused the late-stage clinical failure of numerous experimental therapies and treatments. Although these diseases continue to plague nearly six million Americans, scientists and researchers in Orlando are developing technology to create low-cost, accurate models to study these diseases as well as give researchers early key insights into potential therapies.

Rise of Orlando: Startups Take Center Stage

Following the announcement that the Rise of the Rest Road Trip will kick off its eighth annual tour in Orlando, regional entrepreneurs submitted 152 pitches for the competition. Today, the Rise of the Rest investment team announced eight regional startups as finalists for the pitch competition.

Led by AOL co-founder and Revolution Chairman and CEO Steve Case and his group of iconic entrepreneurs, the tour will visit local startups, hear directly from entrepreneurs and, at the end of the tour, invest $100,000 in the most promising local startup through a pitch competition.

Orlando Ranks High in Startup Density

Orlando ranks third in the 2017 Kauffman Index of Startup Activity in terms of Startup Density. The Kauffman Index is a series of studies measuring the results of entrepreneurial activity in a metropolitan area. The Index is a great predictor of an area’s growth because it measures “new business creation, market opportunity, and startup density.” The Index examines business activity in thirty-nine metropolitan areas by sampling and analyzing three components: rate of new entrepreneurs, opportunity share of new entrepreneurs, and startup density.
