Record number of higher education students complete degree programs in Orlando

Graduation day is a memorable occasion for any student – it marks the conclusion of years of study and hard work, it brings the hope of a more prosperous future and it empowers graduates with the sense that they now have the tools necessary to enter a fiercely competitive labor market. December 13, 2017 signified another milestone at Seminole State College of Florida. Those at the commencement ceremony were among the largest class ever to graduate from the college. Altogether, more than 3,500 students received their degrees and certificates that day.

Central Florida Political Leadership Institute announces 2017 class

The Central Florida Political Leadership Institute (PLI), an innovative, groundbreaking program designed to strengthen and equip the region’s future leaders with training prior to their decision to run for public office, will begin its 2017 class in September. Since its inception in 2008, 17 graduates have served public office in the Central Florida region. Twenty-one finalists were chosen and represent Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia counties.

A selection committee made up of BusinessForce members and investors reviewed the strength of applications, conducted interviews and selected the participants, ensuring representation from a wide range of business, civic and community organizations.

In the three years since its completion, Florida Polytechnic University’s unique architecture has been turning heads and piquing the curiosity of Central Florida residents as they travel west on Interstate 4 toward Lakeland. Members of the Central Florida Young Professionals Advisory Council (YPAC), a group that engages up-and-coming talent, heard the story behind the distinctive building from the university’s foremost expert - Florida Polytechnic founding President, Dr. Randy K. Avent, during their August gathering.

Orlando's real-world education meets the demands of the future workforce

In a middle school classroom, a group of 11-year-olds focus intensely on inputting complex patterns of symbols to form computer coding. A few miles down the road, students in a high school class assemble smartboards to build a robot.  At the same time, fourth graders in a nearby Spanish class prepare to connect live with students in Puerto Rico. On the other end of town, teenagers in a magnet program learn how to start a business and train at local companies. Across the Orlando region, these stories represent a new age of learning for K-12 students that prepares them for successful careers while meeting the workforce demands of the future.

The growth of social entrepreneurship in Orlando

Ten years ago, Shawn Seipler learned that the barely used bars of hotel soap he left behind during business trips ended up in a landfill. Shawn realized that these products could be recycled to prevent hygiene-related illnesses around the globe, and from this transformational idea, the organization Clean the World was born. The global benefit corporation, headquartered in Orlando, collects and recycles soap products discarded by the hospitality industry and distributes these products to the impoverished, preventing millions of hygiene-related deaths each year.
